Video Transcript
Hello and welcome to Episode 17 of the Facilitator Tips video series.
My name is Mark Collard, I’m an experiential trainer and author, and in this series, I’m sharing some valuable tips and today I want to focus on FUNN.
Now we often talk about fun a great deal in this series and if you’re a leader you would understand how important this is, but you’ll note that I spell it with an extra N. That is because my good friend, colleague, and mentor Karl Rohnke had coined this term to understand this vital piece of facilitation, and that is Functional Understanding is Not Necessary.
That is to say that when you load up your program with plenty moments of fun, the group doesn’t actually have to understand what’s going on to have a good time, because fun is contagious. It’s disarming. It’s also transformative. It invites people into a space where they wish to participate. So it becomes a very potent tool.
Because this is what I’ve discovered, working with thousands of people all over the world, that when there’s no fun people find it difficult to engage. When there’s no trust people pull back from participating. And importantly when there’s no challenge, all you’re left with is boredom and routine.
And so lashings of fun in your program engage people which of course just makes it easy for them to connect with other people, and as you’ve heard me say in the past connect before content. Connection before content is so critical to achieving and amplifying your outcomes.
And here’s my last-minute tip, and that is, think about your program and think of moments where you could integrate playful moments, playful moments where maybe it’s got nothing to do with your content, it’s just little bit of inching in with a little bit of fun and see what happens. If all that you get is just a few fun minutes of joy, well that in and of itself is a wonderful prize but it could also do something else to help build connections within your group.
And that’s it for Episode 17.
