Step-by-Step Instructions

This creative team-building exercise transforms simple materials into a collaborative mapping challenge. Map Making encourages groups to share knowledge and work together to recreate geographical features from memory. Perfect for outdoor settings or spacious rooms, this fun team-building activity requires minimal preparation yet delivers meaningful engagement. The physical nature of arranging materials builds communication while testing spatial awareness. Suitable for diverse groups, it naturally reveals how teams organise themselves around a shared goal.

Map Making – Creative Team-Building Exercise
  1. Supply your group with a bunch of long lengths of tubular webbing (or ropes.)
  2. Challenge your group to lay the webbing onto the ground to represent the two-dimensional shape or map of the world (or township, state, etc.)
  3. Encourage your group to work collaboratively to produce a map, as accurately as possible.
  4. Allow 10 to 15 minutes to complete the task.
  5. Once completed, consider using the map as a reflection tool (see Reflection Tips tab.)

    I’ve found this to be a great opening activity even for groups up to 25. It is a great way to learn new things about one another in an activity that is very non-threatening. I also gives me the facilitator a little insight about the group.
