Hi and welcome to Episode 19 of the Facilitator Tips video series.
My name is Mark Collard, I’m an experiential trainer and author, and in this series, I’m sharing just those little nuggets of wisdom that I’ve discovered over the years and today I want to focus on this, try new things all the time.
Now I think at one level we understand the value of doing something new. It keeps us fresh, maybe interested and engaged, but it’s about doing it all the time not just once a year. I think of the almost 30 years I’ve been involved with this industry introducing many, many group games and activities. I look at my program today, even just from two years ago and they are almost chalk and cheese, barely anything that is recognisable that would overlap between the two because I’m constantly looking for new stuff.
It is easy to sit in this space of safety because it’s comfortable and it’s routine. You know you’re going to achieve success. There’s nothing wrong with that. But the value of trying new things moves you into a space of yes, it could be a little bit risky but it’s going to engage you. You’re going to learn in that space because it sits within your stretch zone, and importantly it becomes new for you as much as it is for your group. And maybe you’re one of those people where people come to you looking for new ideas. And so this should just be part of your practice.
So for me, my last minute tip would be right now, today, this afternoon, tomorrow, as soon as you can, the next 24 hours, find an opportunity to do something that is new, something you have not done before. Jump on to the activity database. Look for a new activity. Talk to a colleague. Find a new strategy or another facilitation tip you haven’t tried before and integrate it quickly into your routine. It doesn’t have to be very long or big or dramatic but do that.
And then once you get comfortable with it do it over and over again and continue to expand not only your repertoire but also your profession as well and your development as a person in this space.
That is the end of this episode. If you find value in that snippet then I encourage you to check out all of the other episodes but also share this with your friends and colleagues. Leave a comment. I would love to hear from you. And importantly if you would like to learn more about other things go to our show notes at www.playmeo.com Episode 19.
Thanks again so much for listening. I hope you found value in this.
I’ll see you next time. Bye-bye.
