Team-Building Activities with a Deck of Playing Cards

Grab a deck of playing cards and get ready to discover five exciting and interactive team-building games that will encourage collaboration, problem-solving, and trust.

These activities are designed to bring teams together, build connections, and sharpen facilitation skills – all while having fun.

Let’s dive in!

The Power of Playing Team-Building Games

Recent research confirms that successful team-building is all about interaction and shared experiences.

That is to say, any activity that invites a group to engage, interact, and create something together can be considered “team building.”

While structured exercises are great, even simple activities – like these card-based challenges – can strengthen teamwork skills.

Each of these games will inspire teamwork, problem-solving, and strategic thinking.

Team-Building Games using Playing Cards

Here are five of my favourite experiential activities using a regular deck of playing cards that invite groups to interact, share and build trust.

Or, in other words, build team skills.

#1 Change Up

Start by randomly and secretly distributing one card to each participant.

If you have 22 people, you’ll distribute 22 cards. Tell everyone not to look at their card or anyone else’s just yet.

The Rules:

  • When you say “Go,” everyone turns over their card at the same time.
  • Start a timer. The goal is for the group to form a straight line based on the numerical value of their cards, from lowest to highest.
  • The suit doesn’t matter, so a 9 of hearts stands between the 8s and 10s. If some numbers are missing, participants must figure out how to position themselves best.

Once completed, have everyone turn their card down, randomly swap with someone else, and repeat. Over several rounds, the group will refine their strategy, working to beat their previous time.

This is a fantastic team-building exercise that encourages problem-solving, communication, and cooperation.

#2 Flip Over Ten

This game focuses on memory, problem-solving, and continuous improvement.

The Rules:

  • Select 10 cards numbered Ace (1) through 10 and place them face down, scattered randomly. The suit doesn’t matter.
  • One person at a time races to flip over a card.
  • The first card they need to find is the Ace.
  • If they flip over any other card (other than the Ace,) they must place it back down in its original spot (face-down) before running back to their team.
  • The next person repeats the process, flipping one card at a time in sequence (Ace, then 2, then 3, etc.).
  • Once a correct card is found, it stays face-up.
  • Time how long it takes to correctly flip all 10 cards in order.

Repeat the game over multiple rounds to see if the group can improve their time!

This game is an excellent way to build planning skills, teamwork, and problem-solving strategies.

#3 Prediction

This game is quick, thrilling, and filled with suspense! It works best with groups of 5 to 10 people.

The Rules:

  • Shuffle a deck of cards and place them face down.
  • The first player predicts what the next card is NOT going to be, eg “It’s not going to be an 8.”
  • Flip the card. If the player was correct, set it aside and continue.
  • If the card matches what they said it wouldn’t be (eg they said “not an 8,” and it was an 8), this round of the game ends.
  • The group counts how many cards they successfully flipped before making a wrong prediction.
  • Shuffle and play again, aiming to beat the previous score.

This is a great team-building game for practising strategic thinking and risk assessment. If you want to level up your facilitation skills, try introducing variations!

#4 Blackjack

This game involves quick thinking and strategic collaboration.

The Rules:

  • Hand out one card per person, but do not let them look at it.
  • Each person must hold the card against their forehead, so everyone except them can see its value.
  • The goal is to form groups where the total sum of the cards equals 19, 20, or 21.
  • Picture cards are worth 10, and Aces can be 1 or 11.
  • The challenge is that players can’t be told what their card is. They might be able to deduce what its value is, but they can never know for sure.
  • The game continues until every player is part of a valid group.

If you have fewer than 20 players, it may take some adjusting to ensure everyone can form a valid sum. But that’s part of the challenge! This game is perfect for enhancing collaboration and problem-solving in a fun and engaging way.

#5 Get Twenty

This game combines math skills, teamwork, and creativity.

The Rules:

  • Split players into small groups of 2 to 5 people.
  • Each group receives five random playing cards.
  • Their task? Use addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to make the sum exactly 20.
  • Picture cards = 10, and Aces = 1 or 11.
  • If a group finds a solution quickly, challenge them to find alternative solutions.
  • If no group finds a valid equation, invite others to step in and help!

This game encourages logical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork—and it’s always fun to see the creative equations people come up with!
