Step-by-Step Instructions

This interactive group warm-up combines movement, observation and deduction in an engaging circle activity. Follow The Leader challenges participants to mimic changing movements while one observer tries to identify the secret leader. The energiser warm-up game creates laughter and physical engagement as participants attempt to follow seamlessly. Perfect for workshops, training sessions or classroom settings, this active guessing game develops attention to detail, peripheral awareness and non-verbal communication skills.

Follow The Leader – Interactive Group Warm-Up
  1. Form a circle.
  2. One person volunteers to be the first ‘observer’ and then closes their eyes.
  3. Meanwhile, the rest of your group silently points to one other person in the circle to become the ‘leader.’
  4. While the observer has their eyes closed, instruct the leader to start making a series of random movements.
  5. The rest of the group will imitate these movements, as soon and as often as they occur.
  6. Now, ask the observer to open their eyes and move into the centre of the circle.
  7. The observer’s goal is to identify who is initiating the series of moves (leader) in less than five guesses.
  8. Encourage the ‘leader’ to frequently change their movements.
  9. Continue play for several rounds, allowing different people to assume the leader and observer roles.

    Fun and simple guessing game that produces lots of laughs as the group tries to follow and coordinate their actions to that of the leaders without giving the leader away.

    Can be useful as a name game too for people to ask the name of the person they are identifying as the leader if they do not know it.

    Also useful as a gentle starter activity as it helps people really focus on the task of either hiding the leader or guessing the leader though subtle observations and focus.
