Step-by-Step Instructions

This team navigation challenge tests groups to work together while relying on senses other than sight. Group Compass Walk creates powerful moments of trust as participants must communicate clearly to reach their goal. Perfect for leadership training or outdoor education, this trust-building exercise develops communication skills. The simple setup makes it easy to run in various open spaces with minimal preparation. Groups quickly discover how important listening becomes when visual cues are removed.

Group Compass Walk – Team Navigation Challenge
  1. Position your group at one end or edge of a wide open space.
  2. Nominate a specific object at the opposite end of the space, approx 50 to 100 metres away, eg a tree, door.
  3. Group aims to walk in a straight line to this object with their eyes closed, stopping just short of the object.
  4. Group must remain in total physical contact with one another at all times.
  5. Group may stop and start as often they choose along their journey, and may communicate (with eyes closed) at all times.
  6. Upon reaching its target, ask your group to keep their eyes closed and, as individuals, point in the direction of where they personally believe the object is situated.
  7. Finally, ask everyone to open their eyes.
  8. Invite your group to reflect on the outcome and the process they undertook to plan and execute their journey.

Can this be played at night? I was thinking of a night walk activity. Any ideas of how I can incorporate this? Thanks.
