Step-by-Step Instructions

This animated group game combines physical movement, sound effects and friendly competition to create an immersive experience. Evolution encourages participants to embody different creatures while engaging in quick Rock-Paper-Scissors matches to determine progression. The fun large group game accommodates any number of players and generates laughter throughout the session. Perfect for classroom settings, training workshops or youth programs, this fun elimination game helps break down social barriers while boosting energy levels in an inclusive and memorable way.

Evolution – Animated Group Game
  1. Introduce five animated creatures, each with a unique physical stance and sound. For example:
Egg – crouch down into a little ball with legs, and make muffled “EEK-EEK” sounds.
Chicken – flap your arms by your sides and make clucking sounds.
Dinosaur – raise your arms above your head, take big heavy strides and make scary noises.
Ninja Turtle – make like a kung-fu champion slicing the air with lots of karate chops and kicks.
Supreme Being – fold your arms like a genie, look calm and wise.
  2. Everyone aims to become a Supreme Being.
  3. When play begins, everyone starts at the lowest level (the egg.)
  4. To progress through the five phases, each creature must find another like-creature and play a quick round of Rock-Paper-Scissors.
  5. The ‘winner’ steps up one evolutionary phase, and the ‘loser’ will drop down a phase.
  6. In the case of two eggs facing off, the ‘loser’ remains an egg.
  7. Play for a minute or two, or until the energy starts to wane.

My students love this! I added an “Ultimate Supreme Being” at the end and to beat them you have to win a best-of-three RPS. Ultimate Supreme Being gets to wear a sequin-laced cowboy hat for as long as they remain in that position. For some reason, that is super motivating to middle school students!

This is great news Daniel, thanks for sharing. Yep, middle school students can be a mystery sometimes, and it always feels good when something works!

Another variation that I’ve learned and found helpful is superheros instead of supreme beings. The superheros goal is of course to help others – reach the top of the evolutionary stages! No one gets left behind.

Mason, I love the cooperative nature of your variation. Thanks for sharing 🙂

Great activity especially if you have a group full of energy.
Use it quite often and works a treat.
Variation is that anyone how doesn’t progress can remain at the same level instead of dropping down a phase. Usually use that first and then introduce the dropping down a phase as extra level.

Another fun add is that everyone who reaches the Supreme Being, get sing a song of their choosing that they all know the lyrics to.. the one i was shown was “Stop, In the name of love” by the Supremes.. if the campers do not know it, they can sing any song of their choosing.. Great to have everyone singing with actions and in sync

Clever use of the Supremes here, nice one David 🙂
